April 5, 2009. Poplar Park, the Hibernian Banshee's vs. Blackthorn in their third league match of the season. The Banshee's took the field in a relaxed state against a very strong Blackthorn side and came out with a 32-5 win. Half time score was 20-5. The Blackthorn girls were not the same group in our scrimmage four weeks ago. They were organized and quite strong. The Banshee's were the same team from the scrimmage four weeks ago. Banshee Rugby was relentless in attack and unyielding in their defense. From the opening kickoff to the final whistle the girls were playing very tough.
We kicked off to BT and immediately fullback Amanda Kieffer leveled the girl who received the kick. The 3 minute mark from a BT penalty near their goal line Lauren Hicks tapped to herself and rushed the goal line setting up a ruck that saw several girls fighting for possession and Sommer touched down near the corner for an unconverted try, 5-0. The BT girls came right back trying to score , stopped by Banshee's and Sam Rohn gave a nice clearing kick getting us out of trouble. At 8 minutes from near our goal line, flanker Avery Wunder scooped up the ball and flew down the side line for a 90 yard try, unconverted, 10-0. The 19 minute mark from a stolen BT scrum Marino fed Amanda Kieffer who barreled her way in for our third try of the game, 15-0. All the while, the Banshee's were playing very spirited rugby, not allowing BT very much room. And Bt was trying. 24 minutes from another stolen BT scrum #8 Sommer grabbed the ball feeding Marino who passed beautifully to center Dyana Henry who zoomed in for the try, 20-0. At 27 minutes a BT player made it in to the try line but was held up in goal for no try, great defense!. BT was given a scrum and they rumbled in for their only points of the day, 20-5. At the 33rd minute Amanda got a ball to run with and took off for the side line, turned the corner and was gone, however their speedy wing caught her just before the goal line. Wow! Half.
The second half had us receiving the kick and a big play started with Avery to Jacki to Amanda who was stopped just before scoring again. Beautiful play from forwards Nicole Jones, Shauna Kuepper, Devon Skinner and Lauren Hicks. These girls made nice stops throughout the match. Jones had some nice offensive pop out there as well, good stuff. The 46th minute flyhalf Jacki Sacco made a great run feeding Amanda very nicely who ran in her second try of the day, 25-5. Banshee's were hitting really hard and at the 53rd minute a BT needed two minutes to get herself together from a big hit. The game leveled off for the next 10 minutes with both sides running at each other hard. BT could not crack the defense and the Banshee's were playing smart, safe rugby with a four try lead. The last minute of play from our scrum Sommer picked from the base of the scrum and raced to the goal line feeding Avery who scored under the posts for a converted try (Rohn), 32-5.
Notes: Great ball management. Strong scrummaging, we drove them back many times(27 scrums). Equal in line outs. We lost more rucks and won more mauls. We don't even practice the maul. We were just very aggressive (Shuana). Penalties- 13 against and only two for us. That can be troubling. Marino played well at scrumhalf and Alyssa and Kelli stepped in and did a good job.
The side: 1. Hovemeyer, 2. Schweikert, 3. Jones, 4. Hicks, 5. Skinner, 6. Wunder, 7. Kuepper, 8. Heffelfinger, 9. Marino, 10. Sacco (c), 11. Henry, 12. Buck, 13. Rohn, 14. Gilbert, 15. Kieffer, 16. Bright, 17. Klimowicz.
Scoring: Kieffer 2T, Wunder 2T, Heffelfinger 1T, Henry 1T, Rohn 1C.
The second side was won by the Banshee's 7-0. Kieffer scored the try and Gilbert converted. Macy Bright and Sarah Klimowicz played well in this match.
